Brief info
Russell has 14 years of experience working in the Television and Media Production industry. He is a skilled cameraman, video editor and shoot director, having worked on a full spectrum of specialties including production management and as a team leader. Russell is an active and friendly individual who enjoys time in nature and the outdoors. He especially likes opportunities to bring nature conservation, local communities and media together through television and film. He recognised his passion for media production while working as a runner and production assistant over his school holidays.
Russel qualified as a Sound Engineer in 2007 and started his career recording sound on location. Soon after, he moved onto operating cameras and video editing, becoming post-production manager and online video editor for the company he worked at in 2009. He also worked as the in-house insert producer and video editor for well know environmental news show 50|50 on SABC in 2012 and 2013. Russell received the SAB Merit Award for Environmental Journalism in the Broadcast Category in 2012 and has also qualified with Diplomas in Video Production and Photography.
Russel is currently working on collaborative films with the Richtersveld community in South Africa and on the Namaqualand and Richtersveld episodes of the Wild World Diaries series. He is also shooting the Voices from the Ground clips that give people at community level an opportunity to have their voices heard.
Russel is a technical and creative team player. He has a filmed extensively in the Richtersveld and has deep passion for local communities and sustainable living which he practises in his own off-the-grid rural house in the Zuurbraak Mountains.
